Liberator AAC Summit Success

3/08/2016

On Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd July 2016, Liberator hosted our inaugural AAC Summit at the Treacy Centre in Melbourne. The Summit was the result of many months of preparation by our national consultant and management team, and we were so excited to welcome over 100 people who use AAC, parents and family members, carers, therapists, educators and other AAC champions!

The Summit was kicked off by our infectiously enthusiastic keynote speaker, Speech Pathologist Chris Bugaj, who had travelled all the way from Virginia, USA (where he works in the Loudoun County Public Schools Assistive Technology Team). Chris set the tone by inspiring attendees to consistently challenge themselves and the teams around them to always choose the least restrictive option when it comes to communication. Chris helped the Liberator team to achieve our goal of creating a dynamic event where attendees set the tone and asked the questions, then worked together with presenters to deliver the information and ideas.

We were so fortunate to welcome our other international speakers, Speech Pathologists Sarah Wilds and Cynthia Heryanto, from our parent company (Prentke Romich Company) in the USA. Sarah & Cynthia shared their expertise in using alternative access methods for communication - including switch scanning through CoreScanner, headpointing with NuPoint and eyegaze with NuEye on our Accent device range.

We  received rave reviews about the sessions that featured the talents of local AAC users - with Fiona Given & Ace Bryans sharing their experiences, ideas and strategies to an eager audience. We even managed to video call a few of our international users from around the world! To add to the fantastic line-up of experts in AAC, we heard from local therapists and families, who delivered workshops that were literally overflowing, to audiences eager to learn new ideas for implementing AAC with their teams.

After two days of learning, networking and communicating, we brought Friday to a close by sharing our 'take-aways' from the event. However, no one was game to compete with Ace in his BEST JOKE competition - he blew away the competition with his closing joke: What does one guy in a wheelchair say to another guy in a wheelchair before they give their presentations? BRAKE A WHEEL!!

Liberator would like to thank everyone who participated in the AAC Summit for an unforgettable two days!
