The Impact of Motor Mouth Camp
As an AAC mentor and someone passionate about communication inclusion, I’ve had the privilege of working with many individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve witnessed is the transformation that happens at Motor Mouth Camp—a program that Variety WA proudly supports.
About Me
Hi, I’m Joseph Harrall, but most people call me Joey. I was born with cerebral palsy, and from a young age, I’ve used AAC devices to communicate. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep passion for helping others find their voice, just as I did.
My journey with AAC has empowered me to live independently, communicate effectively, and now, mentor others who are starting on their own AAC path. As an ambassador for Liberator and a dedicated AAC mentor, I’ve had the opportunity to inspire both AAC users and their families to embrace communication technology and build confidence in expressing themselves.
My work at Motor Mouth Camp is particularly meaningful, as it allows me to give back to a community that has supported me and help others realise the endless possibilities AAC can offer.
A Safe Space for Growth and Connection
Motor Mouth Camp is a unique initiative designed for children with complex communication needs who rely on AAC devices. The camp offers these children and their families a space to learn, grow, and engage in communication activities in a supportive, immersive environment. Held annually during school holidays, this camp provides a blend of fun, learning, and connection, focusing on making AAC devices an essential part of everyday life.
For many of the families and children attending, this camp is the first time they are surrounded by others who fully understand their journey. It’s a place where children don’t feel different—they are just part of the community. The camp gives participants the chance to build their confidence in communication while also fostering lasting friendships. The result? Children who leave camp not only more confident in using their devices but empowered to express themselves in everyday life.
“It’s a place where children don’t feel different, they are just part of the community.”
Variety WA’s Role in the Motor Mouth Camp
The camp integrates AAC devices into various activities, helping children explore the full potential of their devices in real-world scenarios. By offering technical assistance and ensuring every family understands how to utilise the devices effectively, Variety WA plays a crucial role in maximizing the camp’s impact.
Inspiring Families and Children
One of the most impactful moments for me, as an AAC mentor, is seeing the inspiration that parents and children gain when they see what’s possible. Often, when they watch me use my AAC device confidently, navigating conversations and daily tasks, it lights a spark. They realize that their children can achieve the same independence and self-expression. This moment of realisation is powerful, parents leave with a renewed sense of hope, and children feel empowered to embrace their devices as a way to find their voice. It’s these moments that truly highlight the importance of what we do at Motor Mouth Camp.
A Community Experience for Families and Volunteers
One of the standout aspects of Motor Mouth Camp is that it doesn’t just focus on the children—it’s a full family experience. Parents and siblings participate in workshops, learn communication strategies, and meet other families walking the same path. The knowledge gained at the camp helps strengthen communication at home and builds a supportive community for families.
Additionally, for volunteers, it’s an incredible learning opportunity. Speech pathologists, AAC specialists, and volunteers have the chance to deepen their understanding of AAC and work closely with users in a practical setting. This hands-on experience is invaluable for professionals and contributes to improving AAC support across Australia.
Why Motor Mouth Camp Matters
For many AAC users, expressing themselves is a daily challenge. The confidence and independence gained at Motor Mouth Camp are priceless. It’s not just about learning how to use a device better—it’s about embracing a voice that might otherwise go unheard.
As an AAC mentor, it’s inspiring to witness the positive changes that happen at the camp. Children go from being hesitant communicators to individuals who aren’t afraid to express themselves. They take these skills back into their daily lives, which often results in improved communication at school, home, and in social settings.
“The confidence and independence gained at Motor Mouth Camp are priceless. It’s not just about learning how to use a device better – it’s about embracing a voice that might otherwise go unheard.”
