AAC Adventures: Stories from Jess about Milly 🐶

Welcome to AAC Adventures, where our AAC Experience Advisers share authentic stories of life with communication devices. These aren’t case studies or theory – they’re real experiences from people who live with AAC every day, sharing the breakthrough moments, creative solutions, everyday wins, and honest challenges too.

Today’s story comes from Jess:

Hey everyone, I’m Jess!

I’m going to talk about how I used my communication device to teach my dog basic commands.

I pre-programmed some basic commands for Milly, my Golden Retriever.

These are “Milly Come” Milly Stay” “Milly Sit” & “Good girl”.

It took approximately 1 year of training for Milly to recognise the ‘Ivona – Nicole’ voice and commands of my communication device.

I tried a few different voices on my AAC device, and Milly did not like any of the other voices! She would not do anything. I found she only responds to the ‘Ivona – Nicole’ voice command.

I like to take Milly to parks and to the beach, and I love that she listens to me using my AAC device.

Everybody told me that I couldn’t have a dog because I am unable to train her and with constant everyday training and the help of my communication device, I have successfully done this.

I am glad I did not listen to them as Milly is a large part of my life, family and is my baby!

Thank you,

Jess
